Topic: Tips and Strategies for Applying for Employment on and off line When: 7.30pm on Monday, 4th November 2019 Where: Federated Farmers, 70 Forth Street, Invercargill Karen, who is dyslexic herself, has come up with tips and strategies that have recently assisted her with applying for jobs. Completing application forms can be a challenge when you are dyslexic however there are techniques you can use to help make the process easier for you. She will cover the following areas
(Carpark and entrance is at the back of the Federated Farmers building. Go up the driveway to the right of the building.) Dr. Pam Kastner is a passionate advocate for the science of reading! She is an educational consultant at the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) Harrisburg, where she serves as the State Lead Consultant for Literacy. Dr. Kastner currently co-leads Pennsylvania’s Dyslexia Screening and Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program extension and expansion. In addition, Dr. Kastner is currently part of a research team investigating the impact of direct, explicit, systematic instruction in advanced phonemic awareness on student literacy outcomes.
Dr. Kastner serves on the statewide Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) team working extensively in the area of literacy, effective instruction, formative assessment, and professional learning communities. Dr. Kastner has served in a number of leadership capacities at the district level and served as a Pennsylvania Distinguished Educator for the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Dr. Kastner is a certified Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) trainer and a certified reading specialist. Dr. Kastner holds a K-12 Principal certification, and was honored to have earned national board certification as a classroom teacher. Dr. Kastner earned her doctoral degree from Widener University where her dissertation focused on the efficacy of professional learning communities to affect teacher practice toward improving student learning. Dr. Kastner’s mission is to build collaborative partnerships that develop educators’ knowledge and skills leading to increases in student achievement. Speaker: Susan Gibson

I will talk about and show you the tricks that I have used for last 35 years. · Getting organised and staying focused by using templates · Studying advanced subjects by teaching myself. · Problem solving visually. · Writing a lot when I can’t spell and don’t know what words to use. · Creating mad crazy stuff with daydreams. · Going where your gut tells you. · Finding patterns everywhere and doing tricky math’s when I can’t calculate. · Why draw in 2D when I can draw in 3D · Knowing what day it is by marrying someone who is not dyslexic All welcome. Topic: Support available for dyslexics at WINZ, Invercargill. We never know when we will have to go into a WINZ office. It could be supporting a family member, applying for National Super or for applying for support after studying. Navigating the signage, the forms and the processes can become overwhelming. Sue helps give us the big picture of what to expect and what support is available for people with dyslexia.
